Flower Buying Tips

Flowers make great gifts that are full of meaning. Certain flower varieties and colours have become synonymous with a range of sentiments and occasions.

Red is famously the colour of love and seduction, so any red flowers, particularly roses are the perfect gift for someone you love or lust after. Red flowers are also a sign of respect. However, be wary of sending these to your boss as they could be misunderstood!

Pink flowers are more commonly associated with fun and cheeky romance. They make an ideal gift for a secret lover.

White flowers have traditionally been associated with the Circle of Life. They are an appropriate gift for any key life event from birth to death including birthdays, Christenings, engagements, weddings, etc. In particular, white lilies are given in sympathy, while white roses are often given at weddings as they represent purity and innocence.

Yellow flowers are most commonly given as a sign of friendship and happiness. Yellow is the colour of wisdom, so give yellow flowers to your wise, happy friend.

In general, and not surprisingly, brightly-coloured flowers are believed to cheer up the recipient. A good choice for anyone recovering from ill health. If you are trying to soothe a stressed soul then opt for blue flowers as these are believed to deliver a calming effect.

Giving gifts to one another at Easter has been a tradition for hundreds of years. Alongside confectionery, flowers are often given to friends and families during this time. The white lily is the traditional Easter flower, the single flower rising from a bulb symbolising the 3 day resurrection of Christ. Budding pussy willow and bulbed plants such as narcissi, tulips and hyacinths are also considered Easter flowers across Europe and red flowers are often exchanged in Germany to represent the blood of Christ. As Easter coincides with Spring and the awakening of plants from the winter cold, vibrantly coloured fresh arrangements are also a good way to bring joy to family and friends.
