(RED)™ AND FLOWE(RED)™:

What is (RED)?

FLOWE(RED) is proud to be part of (RED). (RED)’s primary objective is to engage the private sector in raising awareness and funds for the Global Fund, to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. Companies whose products take on the (PRODUCT) RED mark contribute a significant percentage of the sales or portion of the profits from that product to the Global Fund to help finance AIDS programmes in Africa, with an emphasis on the health of women and children. Current partners are: American Express (UK only), Apple, Bugaboo, Converse, Dell, Emporio Armani, Hallmark, Gap, Nike, and Starbucks.

(RED) helps transform our incredible collective power as consumers into a financial force to help those in need. Since its launch in the Spring of 2006, more than $140 million has been generated by (RED) partners and events for the Global Fund. (RED) money is at work in Swaziland, Rwanda, Ghana, and Lesotho and supports programmes that have reached more than 4 million people. For more information, visit www.joinred.com.

How much money does FLOWE(RED) contribute to the Global Fund?

All the profits from the sale of FLOWE(RED) products go to the Global Fund to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.

How can (RED) create a flower service like this?

(RED) has collaborated with flower experts Flamingo Flowers Ltd (Flamingo), one of the world’s most highly respected agribusinesses. Flamingo operates with the greatest care for the environment, their employees and community. The company operates a sustainable development strategy and is accredited by organisations including Rainforest Alliance, Fair Trade, Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) and Euregap (2004), abiding by international codes of practice. The company provides various social welfare facilities for its employees including well-equipped hospitals, housing and schools in Kenya.

How many of FLOWE(RED)’s  flowers are from Africa?

Many of the flowers are sourced from Africa, although FLOWE(RED) is supplied from a variety of locations due to the seasonality of flower production. However, Flamingo Flowers, our collaborator, ensures that all flowers are ethically sourced and that all source farms share the goal of sustainable horticulture. This means carefully managing environmental, social and economic challenges to ensure that current developments are not compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

What is the Global Fund?

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was established in 2002 with the support of then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the world's leaders, to dramatically increase resources to fight three of the world's most devastating diseases. Since its creation in 2002, the Global Fund has become the dominant financer of programmes to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, with approved funding of US $15.6 billion for programmes in 140 countries. The Global Fund supports programmes based on agreed performance targets and disburses money in response to proven results. At the end of July 2009, programmes supported by the Global Fund have averted more than 4 million deaths by providing AIDS treatment for 2.3 million people, TB treatment for 5.4 million people, and by the distribution of 88 million insecticide-treated bed nets for the prevention of malaria worldwide. (RED) is the largest private sector contributor to the Global Fund.

How does the (RED) money get to where it needs to go?

By combining the marketing power of the world's leading consumer brands with the accountability, scale and pace of Global Fund grant-making, (RED) has created a new business model to effectively raise and impactfully invest significant resources to combat AIDS in Africa. (RED) grants (i.e. Global Fund grants supported with (RED) funds) represent the best performing programmes within the Global Fund's extensive portfolio of AIDS grants in Africa, thus ensuring that every dollar raised is effectively and immediately translated into lives saved, and that every life thus saved is accounted for. Current (RED) grant countries include Rwanda, Swaziland, Ghana and Lesotho.

Funds raised by (RED) partners are contributed directly to the Global Fund, which then transfers those funds to (RED) grants in line with the achievement of their respective performance targets. Over $140 million has already been raised to date, and (RED) funds have already been disbursed to grant recipients in Rwanda, Swaziland, Ghana and Lesotho to save thousands of lives. As (RED) continues to grow and generate additional funding, so too will the portfolio of AIDS grants supported, while maintaining the strict performance standards of the Global Fund and ensuring the effective use of those funds.

The impact and progress of Global Fund-financed programmes has been possible because of its unique approach. Through its small staff and efficient systems, the Global Fund has administrative costs of less than three percent of all the money contributed to it, ensuring that the vast majority goes directly to support life-saving work in poor countries. (100% of (RED) money is put to work on the ground in Africa; no overhead is taken from these funds). In addition, the Global Fund's performance-based funding model holds its recipients to strict standards, only releasing money if programmes prove that they are achieving strong results and shutting down those that do not spend money effectively. A key aspect of the performance-based model is the oversight of the transparent and effective use of funds. The Global Fund contracts Local Fund Agents, private accounting firms such as PWC or KPMG, in every country receiving funding, who conduct the initial due diligence on financial and management capacity of grant recipients and provide ongoing verification of programme results. As in the case of the Global Fund's suspension of grants to Uganda in 2005 and Ukraine in 2004, any indication of misuse of funds leads to rapid corrective steps – decisive action was taken to replace the grant recipient, guarantee the recovery of funds and ensure the continuation of critical services. As a result, a donor to the Global Fund, whether a private citizen or a government, can be confident that their contribution will rapidly have an impact on the lives of people in need.
